Phelan thanks committee for report on protecting LNG exports

May 13, Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan thanked the House Select Committee on Protecting Texas LNG Exports for submitting an interim report in response to President Joe Biden’s pause on approvals of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects. The select committee’s interim report includes an analysis of the federal government’s legal authority to take such action; assessments of the pause’s economic, environmental and social impacts; and strategies and recommendations to mitigate adverse effects of the pause on Texas’ thriving energy sector.
“Texas stands at the forefront of our nation’s LNG industry, contributing nearly half of all U.S. LNG exports while providing good-paying jobs for Texans and meaningful investments for our local communities,” said Speaker Phelan. “After President Biden abruptly paused federal permitting of new LNG export projects, I created this committee to safeguard the interests of our state and its citizens and ensure that decisions made at the highest levels of government reflect the realities on the ground in Texas. It is crucial for lawmakers to understand what a prolonged interruption would mean for our energy sector, which is not only a cornerstone of our economy but a lifeline to our state’s infrastructure and educational systems. I thank Chairman Jared Patterson and the members of the committee for their diligence in preparing this report and look forward to ongoing discussions on how to protect this vital industry.”
Phelan created the House Select Committee on Protecting Texas LNG Exports on March 25 following President Biden’s announcement of a pause on pending approvals of LNG export projects in January. The interim report identifies recommendations to address the challenges posed by the federal suspension, including increased funding for maritime infrastructure and utilization of regional industry workforce grants through local colleges, among others.
