Venture Global recently announced its Calcasieu Pass LNG export project in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, has begun commercial operations and it will have an effect on Southeast Texas’ economy.
This marked the completion of the project’s commissioning and the start of sales to its long-term customers. The Calcasieu Pass facility can process over 12 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, according to the company’s website.
“Southeast Texas is deeply connected to the success of LNG and energy exports across the region. The Venture Global Project proves what we already know—when the Gulf Coast wins, Southeast Texas grows stronger with it,” said Joe Tant, president & CEO, of the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce.
According to Tant, the successful launch of Calcasieu Pass LNG has several key benefits for Southeast Texas, even though the facility is located just across the border:
• Regional economic growth with increased demand for skilled labor, suppliers and contractors in the LNG and industrial services sectors benefits the entire Gulf Coast, including Southeast Texas. Also, many Southeast Texas businesses, from engineering firms and fabricators to transportation and maintenance providers, are likely to be subcontracted or serve as vendors.
• Strengthening the “Energy Corridor” since the Gulf Coast is already a global hub for energy exports. Venture Global success bolsters investor and international confidence in the region’s stability, reliability, and innovation. This supports momentum for ongoing and future projects in places like Port Arthur, Sabine Pass and Orange.
• Infrastructure spillover from LNG facilities drive shared use of pipelines, ports and utility infrastructure. Improvements or expansions made to support Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass Project could benefit adjacent regions, including Southeast Texas. Regional transportation corridors—like Highway 87, the Intracoastal Waterway, and area rail lines — an economic uplift.
• Job creation and workforce development as demand for experienced LNG and petrochemical workers rises, training programs in Southeast Texas — like those at Lamar State College Port Arthur gain new relevance and funding support. Many residents of Southeast Texas work at or contract with facilities across the Louisiana border.
• Increased tax revenues and investment appeal as energy export activity grows regionally, tax revenues increase benefiting schools, emergency services, and municipal services throughout the Gulf Coast. Southeast Texas is becoming even more attractive for foreign and domestic investment, particularly in hydrogen, carbon capture, and LNG-related infrastructure.
“In summary, Calcasieu Pass’ launch reinforces Southeast Texas’s role as an essential player in the global energy economy and sets the stage for expanded opportunity across the region.” Tant added.
Elton Hollis, co-founder of the Golden Triangle Industrical Group, said the completion of the Calcasieu Pass LNG export project is nothing short of transformative for Southeast Texas — especially for communities like Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. This isn’t merely about unlocking LNG export capabilities; it’s about igniting a cascading impact that will energize every facet of our local economy and uplift the lives of our hardworking families.
“Direct benefits will emerge in the form of stable, well-paying jobs in engineering, construction, operations, and beyond,” said Hollis. “These opportunities are poised to boost demand across sectors — from housing to transportation and retail—ensuring that local businesses thrive and prosper. The ability to process 12 million metric tons of LNG annually creates a dynamic engine of growth that infuses every corner of our region.
He said the success of Calcasieu Pass LNG will not be confined to the immediate area. Its cascading impact extends to surrounding communities north of the Golden Triangle, including Hardin and Newton counties.
“As these areas experience an upturn in economic activity, they too will benefit from increased investments, improved infrastructure, and a surge of opportunities in both the energy sector and related industries. This means more jobs, better services, and a stronger, more interconnected economic future for everyone in the region,” Hollis added. “In essence, the energy propelling the Calcasieu Pass project is set to electrify Southeast Texas. From Beaumont to Port Arthur, Orange to Hardin and Newton counties, the ripple — or rather, the cascading impact — of this milestone will foster a vibrant, prosperous ecosystem that rewards the tireless dedication and resilience of our communities.”
Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel noted Calcasieu Pass LNG reached the milestone in under 68 months from the final investment decision on the project in August 2019, making it among the fastest greenfield LNG projects completed.
The project’s multi-billion-dollar contracts will have a significant positive impact on the United State balance of trade with several European allies.
Due to its innovative, first-of-its kind configuration consisting of many mid-scale, modular liquefaction trains and process facilities that are delivered and installed sequentially, as well as Venture Global’s owner-led approach to construction, the project was able to overcome significant unforeseen challenges, including a pandemic, two hurricanes, and a force majeure event that arose due to major manufacturing issues with the facility’s power island.
Having completed a multi-year rectification and remediation of key components of the facility that underpin the redundancy features inherent in the project’s design, Calcasieu Pass is now ready to operate safely and reliably.
“I am incredibly proud of our team who have worked relentlessly and diligently to successfully construct and commission our first LNG project,” said Sabel. “We are excited to reach this milestone and are grateful for our regulators and supply chain partners who have worked with our team to reach commercial operations as efficiently and safely as possible.”
Notwithstanding the construction progress that we have achieved, the Calcasieu Pass project has maintained an exemplary safety record, outperforming the industry average Total Recordable Incident Rate, which represents Unites States Bureau of Labor Statistics Heavy Construction Industry recordable incidents per 100 workers per year, by a considerable margin.
The long-term sales and purchase agreements at Calcasieu Pass are among the most attractive price points for customers in the world, with average liquefaction fees under $2/mmbtu. Its long-term customers will benefit from low-cost North American LNG for the full duration of their 20-year contracts.
Venture Global is a long-term, low-cost provider of U.S. LNG sourced from resource rich North American natural gas basins. Their business includes assets across the LNG supply chain including production, natural gas transport, shipping and regasification. Its first facility, Calcasieu Pass, commenced producing LNG in January 2022.
The company’s second facility, Plaquemines LNG, achieved first production of LNG in December 2024. The company is currently constructing and developing over 100 MTPA of nameplate production capacity to provide clean, affordable energy to the world.
Venture Global is developing carbon capture and sequestration projects at each of its LNG facilities.
