National Council for Mental Wellbeing honors Spindletop Center staffer with award

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing recently presented Tina Simpson, the Program Facilitator of Peer Services at Spindletop Center, with one of five Awards of Excellence during NatCon22, the industry’s biggest conference.

Simpson received the National Council’s Peer Specialist Award, which recognizes those with lived experience who work in mental health and substance use treatment, using her wisdom and strength to help peers on their own road to recovery.

“Tina’s story is compelling, and her work is even more impressive,” National Council for Mental Wellbeing President and CEO Chuck Ingoglia said. “We are honored to recognize her lifetime of achievements and thank her for her enormous contributions on behalf of those who look to her for guidance.”

“Guided by her faith, extensive training and lived experience, Tina connects with clients and helps them find their own personal path to recovery,” Spindletop touts.

Simpson is certified as a Peer Specialist, recovery coach, Wellness Recovery Action Plan and Whole Health Action Management facilitator and advanced level Wellness Recovery Action Plan facilitator.

“We are so pleased to see Ms. Simpson receive this national recognition,” said Holly Borel, chief executive officer of Spindletop Center. “As a person with lived experience, the perspective she brings to our service system is so valuable.  She gives voice to those we serve, keeping our system in check.  By sharing her own recovery story, she meets individuals in recovery where they are, inspiring and giving them hope that they too can recover.”

NatCon22 was the National Council for Mental Wellbeing’s first conference held in person since NatCon19 in Nashville. The 2022 event was held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center outside of Washington, D.C., on April 11-13. Simpson received her award during the general session on Tuesday, April 12.
