DOJ grants Spindletop Center $550k for mental health liaison program

The Spindletop Center announced Oct. 14 that it has been awarded $550,000 to aid the organization with psychiatric services it provides for inmates in the Orange County Jail, and to implement the Justice and Mental Health Liaison Program (JMHLP) at the local correctional facility.

Spindletop Center announces new chief clinical officer

Spindletop Center announced Aug 8 that Heather Champion, M.Ed., LPC, has been named its new chief clinical officer. Dr. Scott Strang, Spindletop Center’s chief clinical officer for the last several years, has announced his retirement. His last day is to be Aug. 19.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing recently presented Tina Simpson, the Program Facilitator of Peer Services at Spindletop Center, with one of five Awards of Excellence during NatCon22, the industry’s biggest conference.

The Spindletop Center announced Dec. 17 that it has been certified as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) for a period of three years, effective Dec. 1, by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Spindletop Center announced Oct. 20 that Gus Harris, a trustee for Spindletop Center since 1980, died Monday, Oct. 18. “I am heartbroken that our long-time board member, Gus Harris, died suddenly,” said Holly Borel, chief executive officer of Spindletop Center.

Cheniere Energy Inc. recently donated $7,020 to Spindletop Center to aid in the reopening of the Hope Center. “The Hope Center is grateful to Cheniere Energy for this generous donation,” said Garry Lewis, director of the Hope Center.
