In a world where businesses often come and go, Munro’s stands tall nearly a century after opening its doors in Beaumont, serving as a testament to unwavering dedication, community spirit, and a family’s enduring commitment.

Munro’s, a small dry-cleaning business that opened its doors on the corner of Broadway and Mariposa nearly a century ago, is celebrating its 95th year of operation. On Oct. 29, 1928, Munro’s was born under the visionary leadership of William Harvey “Josh” Munro. It was a humble start, a small dry-cleaning business that would go on to survive and thrive through some of the most challenging times in history. The Great Depression, World War II, two military drafts, and even the recent pandemic, nothing could deter this family business from its mission of service and quality.

During World War II, with the men at war, Munro’s had an all-female staff, part of a commitment to adapt and contribute to the community’s needs in trying times. That commitment could be seen again during Hurricane Harvey when, despite local water shortages, Munro’s never missed a day of work to provide service to their customers in the face of adversity.

From its origins as a dry-cleaning business, Munro’s has undertaken significant transformations: in 1972, it branched out into uniform rentals, and in 1978, it expanded further, delving into safety apparel. The business grew, reaching Houston and Louisiana in 1979, and international orders began in the mid-’80s with the company’s first intercontinental shipment to Egypt. Munro’s vision of service and excellence didn’t just embody Beaumont; it extended its reach to Lufkin, Lake Charles, Houston, and even across the nation through online sales.

The roots of Munro’s trace to Jeff Munro’s great-grandfather, who won an Irish lottery and chose to settle in Beaumont, Texas. It was from these humble beginnings that the business found its footing, gradually transforming and expanding while remaining true to its core values.

Today, the legacy of William Harvey “Josh” Munro lives on, not only through his family’s dedication but also through the thriving business he founded. Grandson Bill leads the company, and his son, General Manager Jeff Munro who began with rolling mats in high school, plays a pivotal role in Munro’s continued success. With a staff of 95, the business made plans to mark its 95th anniversary with an employee luncheon Nov. 2, cementing the bonds that keep this company strong.

Over the years, more than 100 local charities and organizations have also benefited from the continuous generosity and service of Munro’s. The dedication to giving back earned Munro’s the prestigious Spindletop Award from the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce in 2012.
