Mayor Becky Ames stated March 13 that she and key city staffers have been in briefings with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of State Health Services and other state leaders regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and plans they hope will keep Texans healthy through the ongoing pandemic.

At the time of this report, no cases have been diagnosed in Beaumont, but the mayor and city administrators are preparing for the possibility of COVID-19 spreading to the area. The mayor and state leaders have been discussing updates on the virus and planning for the worst, if such a scenario should arise.

The mayor's office also announced that Public Health Director Sherry Ulmer would provide "an informational report" on COVID-19 during the upcoming city council meeting scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on March 17 in the city council chambers at City Hall.
