The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program offers free tax preparation and e-filing of federal tax returns for taxpayers earning up to $64,000. To assist in servicing residents of Southeast Texas, Lamar University has partnered with Entergy Texas, Capital One, Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, United Way of Northern Jefferson County, St. Vincent DePaul Society in Raywood, and Jackson Community Center in Orange to host IRS Certified volunteers trained to prepare Federal Tax Returns for 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Taxpayers must bring Social Security cards for all members of their household and photo IDs., as well as all income documents (W2, W2G, 1099s, Social Security 1099, 1095-A). Both spouses are required to sign the tax return before it is filed with the IRS. 

VITA prepares taxes Saturdays from Feb. 3 to April 13, 2024, at the following locations:

• Gloria Ramirez Neighborhood Resource Center 2850 Gulf Street, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 10 will be a Super Tax Day, with food and entertainment for all taxpayers having their taxes prepared that day. Call (409) 347-7891 for more information.

• Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3730 FM 160, Raywood, Texas, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (936) 587-4246 for more information.

• The Jackson Community Center, 520 Decatur Ave. Orange, on Feb. 3, by appointment. Call (409) 779-1981 for more information.

• Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, 2780 Eastex Freeway, Mondays beginning Jan. 29, 2024, through April 15, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call (409) 924-9400 for more information. 

• United Way of Beaumont and North Jefferson County is a DROP OFF site beginning Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, to April 3, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring copies of tax documents and pick up tax returns the next week.

• Lamar Foreign Student tax returns begin Feb. 14, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Contact the International Student Office at (409) 880-7635 for required forms and scheduling a tax session.

Volunteers are needed to maintain and grow the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance VITA program. Anyone interested in giving back to the community will receive IRS training at Lamar University on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, and earn a certification to prepare Federal Tax returns.
