LIT reopening campus Sept. 2

Lamar Institute of Technology has delayed the campus’ reopening date to Wednesday, Sept. 2, from the original date of Monday, Aug. 31, due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Laura on students, faculty and staff, LIT reported Aug. 31.

LIT said its executive team agreed to the new date for several reasons:

• An estimated 10% to 30% of LIT employees and students were still without power, as of Sunday, Aug. 30.
• Unlike other higher education institutions, LIT is technologically based with workforce programs that require hands-on instruction.
• Getting back sooner rather than later allows the college to keep students on track for achieving their educational goals and graduating on time.
• With hurricane season at its peak in September as well as the pandemic still affecting the area, the safe, hands-on instructional is imperative for those who are able to attend.

For faculty, staff and students who can return to campus on Wednesday, class/lab/clinical instruction will resume. Those unable to report to campus beginning on Wednesday are asked to contact their instructors or immediate supervisor, and to complete this survey.

Faculty and supervisors will work with students and employees on accommodating, when possible, individual circumstances especially those without power and/or who have sustained significant damage.

LIT President Dr. Lonnie L. Howard said, “Our hearts go out to all those effected by the devastation of Hurricane Laura. ‘LIT Cares’ for our students, community and employees. Being compassionate during these challenging times is paramount. The Institute will continue to address individual circumstances as they arise.”
