The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commissioner (TABC) has approved Orange County Judge John Gothia’s request for bars to reopen in Orange County, the county announced Oct. 16.

The approval allows local bars to open at 50% capacity as long as they are able to comply with the standard health protocols issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The approval went into effect Oct. 15.

Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order Oct. 7 to open bars and similar establishments at up to 50% capacity in conjunction with county officials. In hospital regions with low COVID-19 hospitalizations, County Judges were enabled to opt their county into opening bars beginning Oct. 14, provided they assist in enforcing health protocols. The Governor's Executive Order also increased the occupancy levels for all business establishments other than bars to 75%.

Bars reopening following the announcement must meet all of the TABC guidelines through Gov. Abbott’s order and are encouraged to contact TABC on how best to implement the changes needed to operate safely.
