A record four Lamar Institute of Technology students were awarded The Texas State University Foundation’s (TSUS’s) highly competitive Edmund P. Kuempel Scholarship.

LIT President Dr. Lonnie L. Howard said, “We are so proud of these outstanding scholars and of breaking yet another established record at LIT. This year has been our college’s time to shine—between our record double-digit enrollment increases and other recent honors, including Niche.com’s recognition of LIT as a Top 10 recipient of 2020 Best Community Colleges in Texas.”

He continued, “Thanks to everyone working together at the Institute, these award winners and other students are truly flourishing and able to fulfill the ‘American Dream.’”

Scholarship recipients include sophomore Dental Hygiene major Haley Abshire, freshmen Radiologic Technology major Brenda Lua-Figueroa, Instrumentation major Andrea Meitzen and Dental Hygiene major Caroline Palombo.

Abshire said, “Receiving the Edmund P. Kuempel Scholarship is an amazing honor and blessing. This gift will allow me to focus on my grades and succeed in the Dental Hygiene program instead of worrying about tuition and program costs.”

Figuera gave a heartfelt thanks to the TSUS Foundation saying, “thanks to you, I am one step closer to (my) goal.”

Meitzen also expressed her gratitude, noting “this award gives me a sense of reassurance that my diligence has not gone unnoticed. Earning my degree will open doors to future career opportunities which will further my quest for financial security,” she said.

Palombo could not contain her excitement after learning the news.

“I am so grateful to have been chosen to receive this scholarship,” Palombo said. “It is an absolute blessing.”

The Edmund P. Kuempel Scholarship Program provides a one-time, $5,000 grant to students to pay for tuition, required fees, living expenses and educational materials to worthy and deserving students, encourages academic excellence, and recognizes student leadership and achievements.
