Lamar Institute of Technology received a brand-new MAXUM gas chromatograph training unit and sample system valued at $80,000 thanks to a donation and installation from partners at TotalEnergies and Siemens Industry.

“This analyzer is the most recent version of its kind,” said David Winfrey, Siemens Senior Account Manager. “When students begin their work in a refinery, they will have trained and operated the exact same device in their classroom.”

The LIT analyzer technology program launched in Fall 2023, and this donation will improve learning as students begin advanced courses this spring.

“We are grateful that representatives from each company will also be providing training to instructors so we have the fresh knowledge to pass on to our students,” said Chelsea Hoke, Instrumentation program director. “Their continued support for our new program will help enhance our hands-on learning opportunities. Our students will benefit daily from their commitment to enrich our educational environments.”

The program prepares individuals for roles such as Analyzer Technician, and they will learn to carry out all aspects of maintenance, modification, calibration, and testing of analyzer instruments. Winfrey said that local refineries can have up to 140 gas chromatograph systems and in response, need a well-trained, qualified workforce to work with them effectively.

“It’s incredibly important to us at TotalEnergies to invest in the future, and these students are our future in this industry and in this community,” said Kraig Devillier, On-Stream Analyzer Supervisor at the TotalEnergies Port Arthur Platform. “We value the dedication our partners here at LIT have to these students and programs. We are proud to contribute to this new analyzer program in this way.”
