CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth has earned the highest possible rating for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national non-profit known for evaluating hospitals on their efforts to protect patients from preventable harm and medical errors, according to a news release.
Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide each spring and fall. The grades are based on over 30 evidence-based measures of patient safety, including maternity and critical care, medication practices, surgical outcomes and the prevention of medical errors.
CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth received an “A” grade in Leapfrog’s most recent national hospital safety survey. This is the hospital’s second “A” in a row.
“I am so proud of our dedicated Associates and medical staff who made this achievement possible,” said Paul Trevino, chief executive officer for CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System. “Earning an A twice in a row from Leapfrog reaffirms the passion and purpose that drive us to serve our community. Our patients can rely on us to provide extraordinary care each time they walk through our doors.”
According to Leapfrog, of the nearly 3,000 hospitals graded, less than one third received an “A” rating. CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth is the only health care system in the Southeast Texas area to receive an A rating from Leapfrog.
“This recognition is a direct reflection of our team prioritizing patient safety each and every day,” said Dr. Lauren Jacoby, chief medical officer for CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System. “We are proud to see our commitment to excellence is not only making a difference for our patients but is also being recognized at a national level.”
According to The Leapfrog Group, nearly one-third of health care spending is wasteful — unnecessary procedures, administrative costs, medical errors and even fraud.
“In a country where more than 200,000 lives are lost every year because of preventable medical errors, Leapfrog is fighting to build a movement for transparency. We serve as a voice for health care purchasers, using their collective influence to foster radical, positive change in U.S. health care,” according to the company’s website.
“For over 20 years we have collected, analyzed, and published health care data on safety, quality, and resource use. That means purchasers can find high-value care. And it means that real people are empowered with the information they need to make better decisions.”
